Welcome to Teddy's Page
Teddy is a true "Pound Puppy". I rescued him from
our local dog pound in June, 1984. He was such a pathetic looking little
thing crouched in the corner of his kennel shivering wet. As his eyed met
mine I knew he was the one for me. I told the Animal Warden that I wanted
him and he advised me that he was due to be destroyed because of his condition.
The only place he had hair was on his head, legs, and tail and his
permanent teeth were not pushing his puppy teeth out so he was having a
difficult time eating because of his sensitive gums. I told the Animal
Warden that his condition didn't concern me. Against the Animal Warden's
better judgment he turned Teddy over to me.
During the ride home I held him in my arms and as his eyes
again met mine, I could tell that he was saying "thank you". I wasn't a
bit concerned about how my other two dogs would accept this new addition to the
family, because I knew in my heart that all three would bond just fine, and they
did just that.
Teddy started treatment right away with my Veterinarian.
The first thing he did was remove about fifteen puppy teeth from his mouth so he
could start to eat again and then he started with weekly medicated baths and
dips to repair the hair lose. Within a few weeks Teddy was starting to
look like a champ. He blended into our family and became my best buddy.
He behaved so well and when he did something wrong, the only correction was a
look into his eyes.
As Teddy's health progressed he became so well
mannered that I began to dress him up and enter him into contest. He won
several and even was asked by a neighboring state's Humane Society if they could
use him as their "Poster Dog" for one of their major fundraisers. I agreed
and the day of the event Teddy dressed in is finest tuxedo and presented a check
to the organization to help other shelter animals find a good and loving home
like he did.
Teddy began to visit Nursing Homes, V. A. Nursing Homes,
Schools, 4-H Club meetings, walked in a lot of parades, and soon became the
Mascot for the
Berkeley County Humane Society.
For fifteen years Teddy
attended every fundraiser that the Humane Society had, helping to raise money
for the shelter and promote adoptions from Humane Societies. His
goal was to show that love and affection can come from an animal that someone
abandoned.
Teddy died on July 31, 2001 from kidney failure at the age of seventeen, but his
memory lives on with many because he left "His Pawprints" not only
in my
heart , but in the hearts of everyone he touched.
